Cath Hew and Darrel Day managed to combine their passions for ocean sailing (Cath) and mountaineering (Darrel) when they purchased Spirit in 2003 and realized the dream of providing expedition support in one of the most beautiful and interesting places on earth. Both are experienced sailors. Cath grew up racing dinghys, and has built her own yachts and between 93 and 97 sailed the latest (an Adams 13M design) around the world, as well as competing in many major ocean races in Australia including the disastrous 1998 Sydney/Hobart Race.  Darrel also was involved with race boats as an adolescent only these boats do 160 miles an hour!, so his back ground in engineering and all things mechanical have provided an excellent skill set for the self sufficiency necessary for sailing in such demanding corners of the world. In 2000, Cath and Darrel visited the Peninsula where they decided to make their dream of sailing to the region a reality that they could share with other like minded and interesting people.

For the summer 03/04 trips Cath and Darrel, were joined by an experienced Ice skipper for their first Peninsula trip then Cath took up the reins as skipper and they sailed double handed across the Drake in a storm to make their rendezvous, on time, at King George Island with the Steve Irwin film crew and complete a very successful season.
